Chapter Six

Dasani cracked his eyes open when he heard his cell phone ring. It took a moment for the sleep to clear. But once it did, Dasani shot into a sitting position. Oh no! He’d fallen asleep in Winter’s bed. His father was going to kill him.

He scooted out of bed and fiddled with his pants until he found his phone. It was Kevin. Dasani answered, looking around frantically for his shoes.

“I tried to call last night, but you didn’t answer,” Kevin said. “Tell me you didn’t go home with that aggravating tiger.” Kevin paused. “No wait, this is you I’m talking about. You didn’t go home with a stranger, so why didn’t you answer? Was your dad around?”

Dasani paused in his search as he frowned. “Why wouldn’t I go home with a man?”

Kevin clucked his tongue. “Because you are you, my friend. The Dasani I know would not go home with a stranger and have hot monkey sex. Though that’s too bad. Hot monkey sex is fun.”

“I don’t even know what hot monkey sex is,” Dasani said as he glanced at his sleeping mate. “But I did go home with the tiger.”

“Shut the door!” Kevin shouted. “No way. You’re lying. I want proof.”

Dasani snapped a quick picture of Winter from the neck up and then sent it to Kevin. “That proof enough?”

A second later Kevin squealed. “Oh my god! You did have hot monkey sex!”

Dasani bit his lip and whispered, “He’s my mate, Kevin.”

“That jerk?” Kevin grunted and then said, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to call him that.”

“Yes, you did. And if I know you—which I do—you want to call him something worse,” Dasani said as he spotted one of his shoes near the dresser.

“I want to call him a…bung hole.”

“Not a curse word but still gross.” Dasani smiled and then frowned. “If I don’t get home, my father is going to raise the roof.” He felt his pulse quicken as he thought of the last time Egbar became angry. His cheek no longer hurt, but Dasani didn’t want a repeat.

“You’re mated now,” Kevin pointed out. “You don’t have to go home. You live with the tiger.”

Dasani saw a door on the other side of the room and investigated. It was a bathroom. He looked back to make sure Winter was still asleep before he took the man’s cell phone from the bedside and hurried into the bathroom, closing the door behind him.

“First off, the man hasn’t asked me,” Dasani said to Kevin. “I’m not inviting myself to live with him. Second, you know I can’t leave Sheba there all by herself. I can’t let her bear the brunt of his anger after I’m gone.”

Kevin knew that Dasani’s father had struck him more than once. He’d shared that much with his best friend. But so far, Egbar hadn’t touched Sheba, and Dasani wanted to keep it that way.

“This bites,” Kevin said. “So what are you going to say if the tiger asks you to move in with him?”

“I’ll have to tell him I can’t.
